Now everyone who knows me knows I love the wild and don’t mind roughing it – especially since Sam and I are both well equipped for camp nights out! But when luxury is thrown your way, why deny it!
Sam booked us at the Sable Valley Treehouses and I was not sure what to expect. The retreat looked luxurious indeed, and the owner Stephanie Fernandes went out of her way to acdate us even though it was a really busy time!
Now getting to the place could be a potentially long mission! After the town of Mackinnon Road on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, turn into a road on the right called Samburu (I know, confusing right!) You drive all the way on this very rough road until you get to Vigurungani, take a left and head to Kinango township, through to Kwale, where someone from the retreat will meet you. It’s a really long, bumpy ride so 4WD’s come highly recommended!
Once we got there we were welcomed by Stephanie and taken to our treehouse, one of only 2 there! We were pleasantly surprised to have our own butler – this is a couples only retreat so it’s very romantic and the plan is never to leave the treehouse!
Drinks are all included, and there is such a variety! You can drink all you want!
At 6pm, our effervesent butler Mulei set up the jacuzzi hot tub with lots of bubble bath and salts – as the sun started to set on the plains! To go with all this, we were given champagne! Have I ever had this luxury? I don’t think so!
Unbeknownst to me, this was a plan Sam had been working for on a while – because out came a ring and Sam on one knee in the hot tub (poor knee cap!) – and of course after the initial shock I said YES!!!
Dinner was served under the stars on the deck – starter carrot and ginger soup, amazing seafood and decadent dessert! Sable Valley is only half an hour from Diani beach, so seafood and beach breeze are aplenty!
It was New Years Eve, and such a magical one! Brekkie the next day was also served on the deck, with fresh fruit, yoghurt and amazing brewed coffee on offer. We lazed around till lunch, when again we were fed, and left soon after.
Stephanie went above and beyond her role and even made us a meal for our camping night out. We will definitely be back here or at her other property, The Cove Treehouses, also for couples only!
If you are looking to be remote and switched off with a loved one, this is the place to be!
