I was practically born in the bush – my dad owned a Safari company and so growing up, our weekends involved lots of trips to the outdoors, to see all sorts of creatures!
I had my Mexican-Canadian friend Israel, and Chilean – Canadian friend Alejandra (talk about exotic!) visiting for the first time, and so we had to do the traditional Kenyan safari, to the majestic Maasai Mara!
Now we roll in true safari-chic style, so I had to go with the best!
Twiga Tours remains the BEST, UNPARALLELED safari company in Kenya, with over 40 years experience in the business. Their attention to detail is meticulous, and their service exemplary!
We were picked up early morning on 14th October by super-polite, super-friendly Tony, one of the best safari drivers I have ever met! Immediately, we were given little gift hats, courtesy of Twiga Tours. You want to keep your clients coming back, this is exactly how you do it! Along with that came branded bottles of water, and off we were.
Tony kept conversation going, which was great! We stopped at a viewpoint on Mai-Mahiu road to check out the amazing Rift Valley – needless to say, my guests were blown away! And that was just the beginning of three very magical days!
Though the last leg of the drive was long and bumpy, we arrived at the luxury-infused Tipilikwani Mara Camp, part of the Atua-Enkop luxury camp family. Tipilikwani is outside the Maasai Mara Game Reserve‘s Talek Gate, and though one would expect this is not as wild an experience, that is totally wrong! On the first night we had a cheetah and elephants outside our tents, and on the second, a hyena (my friend Israel even got mad at me for making hyena sounds at night, calling them closer!)
Tipilikwani’s staff were awesome! Our arrival was welcomed with cold juice to beat the heat, and cold towels to freshen up!! We immediately went for lunch- and George, our waiter for the entire stay, could not be nicer! He took care of our every need, food was always super (everything from duck to lamb and amazing desserts!) and always hot! I had requested for a surprise Maasai dancer performance for my friend, as well as a birthday cake, and boy was it a surprise indeed!
George and gang arranged for a private bonfire for us, and as we drank away to the fire, maasai warriors jumped out from nowhere – my friend’s face transformed from scared to mesmerized! The dancers gave him a necklace and made all of us join the dancing fun! And after all that, they stayed behind to sing Happy Birthday and Jambo Bwana to Israel – it was all so beautiful!
The rooms at Tipilikwani were great too! All looked out to the river, and night time meant the beds were turned down with
hot water bottles! I felt like Karen Blixen in Out of Africa! I also LOVE that they use eco-friendly bathroom toiletries by Cinnabar Green (the tree-hugger in me becomes even happier!). The pool was always clean and always refreshing after a long game-drive!
Speaking of the Game drives, in all my life and all my years of going on safari, I have NEVER had this much luck with seeing all the BIG FIVE in such a short period of time!
Within the first 20 minutes of our first game drive, we say both a cheetah and a leopard! I mean, who gets that luck! it was so amazing! We saw enough lions, elephants, buffaloes and one black rhino!
Tony made sure we had an amazing experience , getting close to all the animals while still staying on the official tracks!
All in all, an AMAZING safari that I would recommend to anyone!
